Traumatic Brain Injury and Healing Touch

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can occur when the normal function of the brain is disrupted by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury. Traumatic Brain Injuries can range from “mild” concussion type events to more severe injuries resulting in extended periods of unconsciousness or memory loss. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 5.3 million Americans are living with disabilities from brain trauma and this contributes to more than 50,000 deaths per year. Risk factors are much higher for men, up to three times more likely to die from a traumatic brain injury than women, and also in people over 65.

Where possible the rehabilitation process should begin immediately after injury. Once memory begins to be restored, the rate of recovery often increases. However, many problems may persist, including those related to movement, memory, attention, complex thinking, speech and language, and other physiological and psychological issues. People living with a traumatic brain injury often have to deal with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, altered personality, and, in some cases, a lack of self awareness of the extent of their injuries. There are also wider social consequences of traumatic brain injuries such as a higher risk of suicide, divorce, chronic unemployment, and substance abuse.

Neurologists and neurosurgeons will generally agree that besides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, there are few medical modalities for treating the brain injured patient. This is where Healing Touch can be used to complement and collaborate with other approaches to health and healing that a patient might already have tried or be using. It can be used in hospitals, in-home care, clinics or nursing homes.

Healing Touch as a holistic energy therapy uses gentle, non-invasive touch to influence and support the human energy system within and surrounding the body. By using these non-invasive techniques to clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields, Healing Touch can affect the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health of the individual.

In Traumatic Brain Injury cases this may include, reducing symptoms of depression, stress, pain, anxiety, anger, and fatigue levels. Healing Touch clears and heals the bodies damaged energy pathways and enables the life force to flow naturally through the body. This is achieved when the healer focuses their intention on the patients greater good and very lightly places their hands on the patient's body.

The goal of Healing Touch is to restore harmony, energy and balance within the human energy system and this complements conventional health care. Using these two different healing philosophies synergistically compliment each other and both are needed for overall well being of the injured individual. When deciding to use any sort of therapy, complementary or conventional, make sure you tell all your health care providers about any of the health approaches you use. This will enable them to coordinate care and manage your health effectively.
