Frequently Asked Questions About Reiki Sessions

What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki energy is a subtle energy. We are all made of energy, science has proven that many times over. It is believed that the Reiki energy (“Universal Life Force Energy”) comes from a Higher Power/God-Consciousness/Source Energy/Jesus Christ (your wording is yours to choose and we respect and honor your word preference during the sessions), which exists in the spiritual realm. When the Reiki energy is channeled it appears to come down from ‘the heavens and flow into the practitioner’s head (Crown Chakra). This “Universal Life Force Energy” flows from the top of the head and into the practitioner’s palms and fingers and then into the recipient.

What is Reiki and what are its benefits?

A Reiki treatment supports the whole person — physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Reiki practitioners place their hands on an area of the recipient either in their energy field (auric field) or directly on the body. Note: please voice any concerns you may have regarding touch - as Reiki may be done entirely off the body. However, in most cases, it feels best to the recipient if they receive physical touch (as humans we crave and desperately need this to function). The Reiki energy flows through the practitioner, like a conduit, and into the recipient receiving the session. This flow may be felt as different types of sensation(s) — such as: heat, coolness, vibration, tingling, heaviness, waves, and/or sometimes as no sensation at all (this doesn’t mean the session is not working). Many clients see colors and may feel a release of some kind from the energetic block leaving the body.

Beneficial Effects:

  • Relaxation & Feelings of Serenity, Security, & Rejuvenation.

  • Usui Reiki is a simple, natural & safe method of spiritual healing & self-improvement that everyone can use.

  • There have been many reports of it helping virtually every known illness & injury & it always creates a beneficial effect.

  • Is also very safe when used in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques.

  • It often helps to relieve adverse side effects and promote recovery.

What are the side effects of Reiki?

Though Reiki is a non-invasive treatment with very few side effects, some people experience headaches, fatigue, weakness, or nausea following treatment. This is because your system is detoxing following the alignment of your chakras.

How do you feel after Reiki?

Most people feel relaxed after a Reiki session. Others may feel unusually tired. This means your body is healing. The tiredness might be accompanied by other side effects, like: headache, stomachache, or weakness.

What are the chakras in Reiki?

The word chakra means wheel in Sanskrit, though these are not like any wheels we’ve ever seen. Within the physical body exists a spiritual body that contains the Chakras and are centers of activity that receive, assimilate and express life force energy. They are responsible for a person's physical, mental, and spiritual functions. They absorb and transmit energies to and from the universe, nature, celestial entities, from people and even from things.

What are the different chakras and what do they do?

1st Chakra, Root or Base (Red) The first chakra is the survival center, the ability to draw abundance from the planet, and is found at the base of the spine. It is the seat of physical vitality and it regulates those mechanisms which keep the physical body alive. It is our foundation and feeling of being grounded. Responsible for making us feel safe and fearless.

2nd Chakra, Sacral or Sexual Center (Orange) This chakra is about two inches below the naval and is the center of sexual energy, the seat of creative power, feelings, and emotions.

3rd Chakra, Solar Plexus Center (Yellow) It is the seat of the will and intuition. This is the connection to your own uniqueness within the universe and your greater purpose. It is also where you process your own psychic development. Responsible for self-esteem, self-confidence, and feelings of self-worth.

4th Chakra, Heart Center (Green): This is the connection between the upper and lower chakras, the intellect and emotions respectively. It is the seat of devotion and compassion, through which love of all kinds (both conditional and unconditional) flows. The energy of connectedness with all life flows here. Responsible for generating feelings of love, joy, and peace.

5th Chakra, Throat Center (Blue) The Throat chakra is the seat of communication, self-expression, and creativity It holds the master blueprint of physical wellness. Many colds and sore throats are the result of not speaking your truth or not speaking up for yourself, especially in women.

6th Chakra, Third Eye or Brow Center (Indigo): This chakra is in the middle of the forehead between and slightly above the eyebrows. It is the seat of clairvoyance and telepathy, higher consciousness, wisdom, ability to make decisions, plus emotional and spiritual love.

7th Chakra, Crown Center (Violet): Located at the very top of the head. Responsible for our sense of beauty, connection to spirituality, and pure bliss.

Can Reiki balance chakras?

Reiki therapy involves balancing the chakras, which are vortices of energy believed to connect the physical body to the energetic one. When there is an imbalance in your chakra system, it will very obviously manifest itself in your body, emotions, thoughts or in circumstances of your life. The key is to be able to interpret these manifestations so that you can target the affected chakra to achieve balance.

Is Reiki a Religion?

Reiki is not a religion. It has no dogma and it does not require a particular belief in order to learn and use Reiki. Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. However, the key to Reiki for us humans is intent; we must intend to use this divinely guided energy to heal, and the recipient must intend to be healed. Because Reiki comes from a higher power, it allows many people to go beyond religious dogma and directly experience their own belief in a higher power.

What should I wear to my Reiki session?

Reiki and Healing Touch Clients (Energywork clients) wear loose, comfortable clothing to their comfort level. It is suggested to remove shoes (leave socks on), outerwear, uncomfortable jewelry, smartwatches, hats, and eyeglasses.

*Please respect our Therapist(s) and silence your phone during sessions. Thank you*

What should I do during my Reiki session?

A client may relax and drift off during the session, almost in a daydream like state. Another may tune in to the work and the body’s responses to it. Some clients sleep. It’s your time. It’s up to you. It is suggested during energy work to remain silent and tune into your breathing. Tune into the sensations of your body. Gently direct your attention to wherever we’re working and experience each moment. Many people are sleep deprived. Sometimes falling asleep during a session yields the deepest sleep a client will get that week. We’re honored to be able to offer that space and time to someone who needs it. Your snoring is a compliment to your practitioner!

What will I notice after a Reiki session?

Some people may experience effects similar to an entire body detox. The primary focus of Energywork, aside from pain relief and relaxation, is to align the energy centers in your body, called chakras. If our body is out of balance or alignment, then certain illnesses and dis-eases may occur. Once the body is back in alignment it takes some time for our system to adjust to the changes. Some people (a small select few) may experience, difficulty sleeping, tiredness, weakness, nausea, stomachache, and/or an increased body temperature. However, the benefits far outweigh these possible unpleasant occurrences. If the client does experience any of these, they should subside within a day or two (and at most - a week). If any concerns arise please call us and a medical professional.

Can Reiki help my anxiety, depression, insomnia, back pain, muscle pain, sciatica, etc.?

Stress is a well-documented factor in pain, illness, and overall wellness. The symptoms of many medical issues may improve with Energywork. The only way to discover any improvements you might get from these approaches is to try them. Sometimes getting noticeable results takes five sessions, but many feel the benefit begin that day. If a condition is caused by daily activities, such as chronic illness, driving for several hours a day, repetitive motion, or other chronic stressors, session may need to be ongoing.

Can Reiki help treat my disease or medical condition?

We are not acting as medical professionals. We do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.  When someone calls us for a diagnosis, medical treatment, or emergency, we refer them to a doctor. That being said, Energywork does allow people living with medical conditions to have a more comfortable life and feel more at home in their bodies. Since stress aggravates all conditions, clients seeking stress reduction through Reiki and Healing Touch Therapy may notice improvements with the symptoms of underlying conditions.

What if I have a tough time relaxing?

Relaxation is a skill anyone can learn. It takes practice! Demanding that the body relax can actually increase stress, creating a fear of failure, and put relaxation out of reach. Instead, we encourage you to show up exactly as you are and to observe without judgment of how you are feeling. Together, we’ll create the conditions that enable relaxation. Clients who bring the desire and intention to relax will find that, with practice and over time, the benefits of the sessions begin lasting longer between each session.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?

We ask 24-hour notice for cancellation (see terms and conditions when booking). You can leave us a voicemail, text, or email us 24 hours a day. We value your time and ours. We reserve the right to charge (or void gift certificates) for missed appointments when we’ve received no notice. We understand that occasionally something comes up which cannot be missed, and we are flexible with emergencies. Just please, let us know.
