An Introduction to the History of Usui Reiki and Healing Touch

USUI REIKI The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means “Universal” and refers to the spiritual dimensions of the soul and Ki which is "vital life force" which flows through All There Is. Therefore the word Reiki means ‘Universal Life Energy”.

The actual origins of Reiki, though, come from the words Raku-Kei; the Art and Science of spiritual self improvement based on origins that go back to ancient Tibet many thousands of years ago. Reiki can be regarded as a form of spiritual healing, a belief system and also a behavioral approach towards personal fulfillment. This technique of Japanese origin, aids stress reduction and relaxation which in turn promotes healing. As a healing practice it is administered by laying hands on the patient and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and this is what causes us to be alive. If this "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki Calligraphy was the most original form of Reiki - used as a form of meditation by Tibetan Lamas. The founder of Usui Reiki, Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is called by Reiki students in Japan, was born August 15, 1865 in the village of Taniai in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, which is located near present-day Nagoya, Japan.

Usui Sensei came across these ancient texts and symbols and their practice and he started using these as a catalyst for his own meditations. He discovered Reiki when he was doing penance whilst fasting. After three weeks he suddenly felt a great Reiki come over him and as he was spiritually awakened, he acquired the Reiki cure. He then tried this cure on his friends and family and found it gave them immediate results. Since then the system and techniques to create the modern Usui Reiki have undergone many modifications, specifically to enhance their appeal to the Western mind.

Reiki treats the entire person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Usui Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. There have been many reports of it helping virtually every known illness and injury and it always creates a beneficial effect. It is also very safe when used in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques and indeed often helps to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

HEALING TOUCH The Healing Touch Program was developed by American practitioner Janet Mentgen (RN, BSN). Janet started studying and practicing energy therapies and teaching them to her colleagues and others who wished to learn in the 1980’s.

In 1988, Janet was honored as the holistic nurse of the year by the American Holistic Nurses' Association (AHNA) for her outstanding work in teaching touch therapies and for its impact on individuals and community. AHNA's efforts to bring energy therapies within their organizational framework created an opportunity for Janet and others to offer Healing Touch in Memphis, Tennessee, and in Gainesville, Florida as a pilot project in 1989. Due to its success, Healing Touch became a certificate program of the AHNA in 1990 with 25 programs offered across the USA in that first year. Colorado Center for Healing Touch, Janet's for-profit business, was established as a provider of Healing Touch classes.

Healing Touch is a bio-field therapy that is an energy-based approach to health and healing. It uses touch to influence the human energy system, specifically the energy field that surrounds the body and the energy center's that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body. Examples of techniques learned in Healing Touch are chakra connection, magnetic clearing, chelation, pain drain and lymphatic release.

There are over 100 successfully completed research projects to date with more in progress, investigating the most effective techniques for Healing Touch. As it's use expands worldwide it is in harmony with people from all walks of life and continues to make their lives better.
